Compare-Lemons : Two different shots on both the C4040 and the SP550. If you look hard (near the center) you can see a smudge spot that is somewhere inside the C4040; yet another reason it's time to upgrade.

Compare-Oranges : Interesting comparison. Exposures are slightly different but I think each camera was on Auto (though I could be wrong).

Compare-RoseVine : Interesting comparison. Results are about what I'd expect, though it's tough to spot differences at less than original size.

Compare-Tree : Interesting comparison. Big differences. The E500 shot was about 20 minutes later than the first two, but otherwise three comparable "point and shoot" shots. I can appreciate just how difficult it is for camera reviewers to try to take consistent comparison photos, though they're probably more careful than I was.

Compare-Dog : Not a great comparison (ok, it's lousy), but goes to show that the subject (and surrounding distractions to both subject and photographer) have a lot to do with the quality of the resulting image. Oh, and sometimes pictures you thought were ok end up being out of focus. If I really cared, I'd shoot several and pick the best, and could get at least one decent shot with any of the three cameras. I should've used flash on all three and should've re-shot the C4040 one, but didn't. I tried to be more consistent on the other comparisons.

Compare-Zoom : Zoom shots from my new Olympus SP-550 18x UltraZoom camera. Two shots of a bird up on the power lines. This is 18x zoom! I could've come close with the E500, but not with the 4MP 3x C4040. I'm not even used to looking for shots like this. The two close-ups are simple crops from the two originals. No editing or re-touching. The house series shows wide (28mm), middle zoom (~61mm), and full zoom (504mm). (For actual comparisons to the C4040 and E500, see other galleries by clicking on "Camera Comparisons" above.)

Compare-Macro : SP-550UZ Macro shots: Tape measure, Altoids, a quarter, and an xD card, all shot with the lens nearly on top of the item -- which explains the poor lighting in some like the Altoids tin. It's tough to shoot something when the lens is almost completely covering it. The "no-is" xD shots had I.S. disabled; the cropped versions show the difference I.S. makes, as I was hand-holding the camera for all of these. No post processing on any of these, all images shot in "Auto" and "super macro".
